NERIKOMI WORKSHOPS
Nerikomi and agateware are ceramic techniques that create patterns from colored clays rather than surface decoration. Nerikomi, originating in Japan, involves carefully layering, stacking, and slicing different colored clays to form geometric or floral designs that are revealed in cross-section, often assembled from patterned slabs and finished with a clear glaze to emphasize the crisp, mosaic-like patterns. Agateware, developed in 18th‑century England, mixes contrasting clays in a looser, less controlled way so that, when thrown on the wheel or molded, the colors stretch into flowing, stone-like veining reminiscent of agate; it is typically glazed transparently or sometimes left partially unglazed. While both techniques celebrate the beauty of the clay body itself, nerikomi focuses on intentional, textile-like designs, whereas agateware highlights more organic, naturally marbled effects.
In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with different clay colors, shapes, and designs under the guidance of Mark Walsh. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience with pottery, this workshop is a great way to expand your skills and create unique ceramic pieces.
No prior experience is necessary for our workshop! It’s suitable for both beginners and seasoned ceramicists. We’ll guide you step-by-step.
You’ll create your own Nerikomi forms, which we will fire for you after the workshop. You can pick up your finished piece at Juniper Clay Shop about 2–3 weeks later.
If pickup isn’t possible we’ll coordinate an alternate time, or we can ship your finished piece to you for an additional fee.
We’ll provide all materials, tools, and clay. We recommend bringing a lunch and a non-alcoholic beverage for a mid-day break. The studio has a fridge which you can store your food in for the duration of the workshop. Filtered water is available as well.
This workshop is for ages 14+.
Cancellations made more than 7 days before the workshop are eligible for a refund. Cancellations within 7 days of the event are non-refundable.
